Graston Technique
At Inlet Integrated Health Centre, we pride ourselves on offering cutting-edge treatments to help you achieve optimal health and recovery. One of the effective therapies we use is the Graston Technique—a specialized form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) that is designed to treat musculoskeletal injuries and conditions.

Whether you're recovering from a sports injury, dealing with chronic pain, or managing soft tissue restrictions, the Graston Technique can help promote healing, reduce pain, and restore mobility.
What is the Graston Technique?
The Graston Technique is a manual therapy method that involves the use of specialized stainless-steel instruments to detect and treat soft tissue dysfunctions. By using these tools, our skilled therapists can target areas of tissue injury or fibrosis (scar tissue), break down adhesions, and promote healing in muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

The technique is effective for a wide range of conditions, particularly those related to repetitive strain, sports injuries, and soft tissue scarring. The controlled movements of the instruments help to increase blood flow, reduce inflammation, and stimulate tissue repair, ultimately improving flexibility, mobility, and function.
How Does the Graston Technique Work?
The Graston Technique works by applying controlled pressure to affected areas of soft tissue using specially designed stainless-steel instruments. These instruments are used to gently “scrape” over the skin, helping to identify and treat areas of muscle tightness, fascial adhesions, scar tissue, and inflammation.

When the instruments move over the tissue, they cause microtrauma to the injured or restricted areas, stimulating a healing response from the body. This process helps to:

-
Break down scar tissue and adhesions
-
Increase blood circulation to the affected area
-
Promote the remodeling of collagen fibers
-
Encourage the growth of healthy tissue
-
Enhance the range of motion and flexibility
-

By targeting these specific areas, the Graston Technique can lead to faster healing times and more effective rehabilitation.
Conditions Treated with the Graston Technique
The Graston Technique is beneficial for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

-
Tendonitis: Treats tendon inflammation and promotes healing in conditions such as Achilles tendonitis, patellar tendonitis, and rotator cuff tendonitis.
-
Plantar Fasciitis: Helps to alleviate pain and improve mobility in the feet by breaking down scar tissue in the fascia.
-
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Relieves tension and restriction in the forearm and wrist, improving hand function and reducing symptoms.
-
Shin Splints: Treats inflammation and muscle tightness in the lower leg, particularly for athletes or those experiencing shin pain.
-
Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis): Breaks up scar tissue and improves shoulder mobility.
-
Sports Injuries: Ideal for treating strains, sprains, and muscle imbalances from sports-related activities.
-
Whiplash and Neck Pain: Targets soft tissue restrictions in the neck, reducing pain and stiffness.
Benefits of the Graston Technique
-
Enhanced Healing: By stimulating blood flow and tissue repair, the Graston Technique accelerates recovery from injuries and surgeries.
-
Reduced Scar Tissue: Helps to break down scar tissue, improving the flexibility and mobility of affected areas.
-
Pain Relief: Promotes the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, leading to reduced pain and discomfort.
-
Improved Range of Motion: Increases flexibility, mobility, and function in injured or restricted areas, allowing for better movement.
-
Non-invasive: The technique is non-surgical and does not require medication, making it a safe, effective option for pain relief and rehabilitation.
What to Expect During Graston Technique Treatment
During a Graston Technique session at Inlet Integrated Health Centre, you will work with one of our trained therapists, who will assess your condition and develop a treatment plan based on your individual needs.

The therapist will use the specialized stainless-steel instruments to apply pressure to the affected areas of your body. While the treatment may cause mild discomfort as adhesions and scar tissue are broken down, it should not be painful. The intensity of the treatment can be adjusted based on your comfort level.

After the treatment, you may experience mild soreness or tenderness in the treated area, similar to the feeling after a deep tissue massage. This is normal and typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours. Many patients report improvements in pain levels and mobility after just a few sessions.
Is the Graston Technique Right for You?
If you are dealing with soft tissue injuries, chronic pain, or restricted movement, the Graston Technique may be an effective solution. This therapy is suitable for individuals of all ages and activity levels, from athletes to those recovering from injuries or surgery.

At Inlet Integrated Health Centre, our team of professionals will work with you to determine if the Graston Technique is right for your specific condition and how it can be incorporated into your personalized treatment plan.
